International Voluntary Service (Edinburgh, Scotland) 12 months, start in February 2019 (or January negotiable)

The International Voluntary Service (IVS) is a UK-based international volunteering and development NGO. Founded in 1931, IVS has historically had a focus on developing projects that support peace and social justice. Our mission is to support the sustainable development of local and global communities across the world through the mutual exchange of volunteers. As the British branch of Service Civil International (SCI), IVS has coordinated the exchange of tens of thousands of volunteers across the globe (https://ivsgb.org/history/). SCI has partnerships in over 80 countries with the majority of core activity taking place in the EU. IVS is a membership organization, which provides volunteers with opportunities to vote on IVS policy and future developments. Our aims are to promote peace, social justice and understanding between people and nations through volunteer projects and activities, in which the cultural exchange and learning aspect are paramount. Our activities within SCI include sending volunteers abroad, as well as receiving volunteers who wish to take part in multicultural projects in Great Britain. We run both short-term (normally 2-3 weeks) and long-term (up to 12 months) projects.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements:
Volunteers will stay in host families and will receive a weekly bus ticket for travel around Edinburgh. In addition, they will receive monthly pocket money.

Training during the project:
Volunteers will receive pre-departure training from their host organizations, an in-country
induction to the organization and ongoing support and supervision. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to get involved in other training opportunities both within and out with the organization.

Volunteer profile:
At IVS the ideal volunteer is interested in the main themes addressed by IVS, keen on widening heir horizons and learning by doing, both in an office environment and in the community. They will want to learn about volunteering and volunteer management in local and international contexts, international relations and cooperation, non-formal learning and training, teamwork and NGO management. We would like someone who likes a challenge but takes it on with a positive outlook, has great aspirations in making the difference in society and is willing to be involved in all aspects of our work, also by taking ownership of new ideas and projects. Volunteers at IVS will be between 18 and 30 years old. IVS promotes equal opportunities and all our volunteers are recruited from a variety of backgrounds to promote diversity, non-discrimination, and inclusion.

Additional information: Volunteers will gain and improve their skills in volunteer and project management, project proposal writing, fundraising, and marketing, international relations, cooperation and development, the running of a charitable organization and general administration.

This organization has additional mentoring or other support suitable for young people with social obstacles, educational difficulties, cultural differences or similar.
